How to Choose a House Painter (page 2)

Finding the painter who's right for you
To find the painter who is right for you, here are some helpful steps. Follow them in order:

• Ask friends for references and
• Select likely names from advertising then
• Call the BBB to ask about these contractors and
• Get estimates from those remaining on the list then
• Evaluate estimates and what "feels right" and
• Choose a painter

Choose a professional
At the very least, your painting contractor should conduct himself/herself as a professional. Even if your contractor is an unlicensed sole operator, there are certain things to expect. Your contractor should:

• Answer the phone or return calls in a timely manner
• Show up on time for your estimate
• Have a business card
• Explain his approach to painting your home
• Tell you what brand of paint (and line) he uses
• Explain what you will need to do before he paints
• Tell you when he can start
• Say how long the job will take
• Give you an exact price

If any house painter fails to do any of the above, you need to find someone else to paint your house.
